The Dept. of Sanskrit was started in the academic year 1993-94. Dr.Shruthikeerthi M.A has been working as Chairman of the Dept., Since the establishment of the Dept. Teaching, Research and Literary activities have been continuously organized from time to time. Dr.B.S.Mahadevaiah has successfully guided 09 Ph.D students and at present four students have been working under his guidance for doctoral degree.M.Phil programme was also started from the academic year 2006-07. With the collaboration of Sanskrita Bharati established at Bangalore, which is working for the promoting and propagating of Sanskrit, every year state level elocution competition and Sanskrit speaking courses are organized. The Dept. has established an excellent rapport with Sanskrit scholars of the two Sanskrit villages viz, Mattur and Hosahalli
      The Dept. has organized 03 Refresher courses for college teachers and different themes on different thrust areas have been selected for these three refresher courses. We are regularly conducting Special Lecturers, Seminars and Workshops by inviting scholars drawn from different areas of Specialisation. Thus the students were exposed to the inputs of the different scholars. These activities enable the students to acheive higher intellectual attainments. Thus the students are helped in every possible way to improve their communication, analytical and writing skills. We have been inviting visiting Professors under the UGC scheme in order to expose the students to the rich knowledge, experience and expertise of those scholars.
      Dr.B.S.Mahadevaiah participated in XI Sanskrit world conference held at Torino, Italy and presented a paper. He has been bestowed with State award and Vidyashankara award for his notable contribution to Sanskrit Language and Literature.
      Every year the Dept.is organizing educational tours to the students and during their tour, they are taken to different Universities and Research Institutions in order to have interaction with faculty members and students.
Several prominent Sanskrit scholars have visited the Dept. and delivered elegant speeches to the faculty members and students to enrich their knowledge
      Dr.Veerendra Hegde, Dharmadhikari, Dharmastala has instituted Gold medal for highest scoring student at M.A. final year examination. In the name of Dr. K.Krishnamurthy, an outstanding Sanskrit scholar, Gold medal for the best thesis of the year in Sanskrit poetics has been instituted.
     The Dept. has imparted quality education to several post-graduate students, some of whom are now well placed in the state Govt. colleges, Research institutions and Universities in different parts of the country.
