Vice-Chancellor of the University


Prof. S. A. Bari, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University assumed Office on the 24th July 2010. He began his carrier as a Lecturer in Mangalore University and has worked as the Private Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University on deputation. He joined Kuvempu University as a Reader and First Chairman of the Department of History and Archaeology on the 6th September 1989. On 11th July 1994, he became a Professor in the same department.


He has served the University as the Registrar, Registrar (Evaluation) and Vice- Chancellor In Charge. He has been three time Dean of Arts Faculty, Dean of student Welfare, First Director of Prasaranga, Kuvempu University, Head of Employment and Information Bureau, Member of Syndicate, Senate and  Academic Council. He has been on various committees of UGC and other National and State bodies. He was Member of the Examination Reforms Committee, Government of Karnataka.


He was the First Director of the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) which was established in 2002-03. His tenure saw the Directorate of Distance Education leap from name to fame and a brand name. As the Director he was instrumental in taking DDE to the different corners of India. He started more than 40 Undergraduate and Post Graduate courses through the Distance mode. The Science courses started through the Distance mode were not only the first of its kind, but were a huge success, the study Centers established all over India brought education closer to the masses with the motto "Education for All".


His busy schedule in Administration did not deter him from undertaking research activities. He has participated in several National and International Seminars, Conferences and Symposia and presented papers. He has published books and edited a few. He has worked on a Post-Doctoral Project sponsored by ICHR on Nationalism in the rural and tribal areas of Shivamogga, Chikkamagalore and Chitradurga districts, He is member of many National and International Bodies and Associations. He has also traveled extensively to countries like Canada, Belgium, Syria, Hong Kong, Egypt, Malaysia and United Arab Emirates on academic assignments. In his 28 years of teaching and research experience he has successfully supervised 7 Ph.D. and 3 M.Phil candidates. 4 more students are presently pursuing research with him.


Before he became the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University the Government of Karnataka appointed him as Special Officer of the newly stared Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Bellary recently. He has prepared a blueprint for the development of the that University and handed over to the Government of Karnataka before he took charge as the Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University.
